Chimpanzee Tracking Uganda. Primate Safari Tour to Budongo Forest

Uganda Safari Chimpanzee Trek
Budongo Forest is one of the oldest and largest natural forests in Uganda where you can walk below older mahogany and iron forest trees. Budongo has an area of 825 sq kms, ,the remaining 47% is grassland. Budongo is found in Masindi, Hoima, and Buliisa districts. Approximately 3-4 hours drive on the way to Murchison falls National Park. It is the biggest forest reserve. There is also an Airstrip for light aircrafts at Kisaru Tea Estates 12 km from Bugoma Eco-tourism site The altitudinal range is 700-1270m. This forest type is classified as medium altitude semi deciduous moist forest, with a high biodiversity with 24 species of small mammals; nine being primates; 465 species of trees and shrubs; 359 species of birds; 289 species of butterflies; and 130 species of moths. Very little illegal activity and encroachment has ensured that the forest remains as nature indeed intended it to be.


The terrain is flat allowing for good on-foot travelling conditions for the average tourist; the campsite is located on the edge of the chimpanzees' home range, significantly diminishing the risk of long trekking excursion before contact is made with the group; the habitat consists of primary forest with medium understory vegetation-density allowing for good visibility of the canopy (and thus of the chimpanzees) and the presence of savanna and grassland areas neighbouring the primary forest present an interesting opportunity for viewing of different ecosystems. Finally there is an extensive (115km in total) and well-maintained trail system that further facilitates visitor accessibility. A variety of tree species like mahogany and the celtis, some of the trees are known to possess medicinal qualities.The forest is a good site for forest walk however its advisable that one moves with a game ranger for safety purposes.

 Kaniyo Pabidi and Busingiro Ecotourism sites are the major tourist site within Budongo Forest Reserve.  Chimpanzee tracking is the most famous activity. Kaniyo - pabidi is situated in the north eastern part of Budongo forest reserve. it is a natural habitat of about 120 chimpazees . However, only one group consisting of about 30 chimpazees has been fully habituated for eco -tourism purposes. Budongo Forest is home to some 600-700 chimpanzees Budongo Forest chimpanzees were first studied in the 1960's.There are also other primate species such as the black and white colobus monkey, the red-tailed monkey, blue monkey, vervet monkey, baboons, small antelopes and pig. Part of kaniyo - pabidi is contiguous with Murchison falls national park and Bugungu wildlife reserve which are managed by Uganda wildlife authority. Hence, some savannah grassland species can be sighted in kaniyo - pabidi, these include bush bucks, red and blue duikers, bush pigs, warthogs, lions, water bucks and buffaloes.


Activities in Busingiro include forest walks, prolific birdlife especially the chocolate-backed kingfisher and the pruvels eladosis, the white-thighed hornbill and puvel's illadopsis on Masindi Paraa road. Primate identification, conservation education, research, butterfly, moths reptiles, small mammals, tropical flowers are abundant identification among others and other micro-organisms form the Eco-system that makes this particular site enviable. . There is a primate research station on the site of an old Sawmill at Sonso.



There are various types of accommodation, in the forest where a campsite and water are available in Pabidi, banda's are complex with a structure reflecting without walks/with walks either am or pm or both and either single or double, the Nyabyaya Forestry Collage Guest House. Boomu Conservation and Crafts Women's Association operates simple Accommodation Bandas near the Park Entry Gate, In addition, another 10 Luxury Tented Camps exclusively for the upper market.
